Safe removal of asbestos is crucial because exposure to this material can lead to serious health complications. If the exposure is short-term, it can cause symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. However, if someone is exposed to it for a long time, they will be at risk of developing serious medical conditions such as mesothelioma and lung cancer, which can be fatal.
Since no level of asbestos exposure can be regarded as safe, asbestos removal must be carried out in a safe and compliant manner.
Asbestos doesn’t pose much risk before it is removed. But if their fibres are disturbed, they can become airborne and spread beyond the site, which can also put the nearby buildings and the public at risk. If not handled correctly, fibres can also be released during the exaction process, which is why it is essential to hire an experienced and licensed asbestos removal company.
At Utopia Waste, we can create a bespoke asbestos removal and disposal plan for you. We can customise our service depending on the volume of asbestos that needs to be removed and the amount of space you have on-site for waste disposal.
Asbestos removal is one of the top services we provide, giving utmost priority to the health and safety of our customers and their employees.

What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals. There are six different types and they all share similar properties and characteristics. The minerals are composed of very fine fibres which are resistance to fire, heat and a variety of other minerals.
With its extraordinary properties, asbestos was previously regarded as the perfect building material. It was used for a long time in different industrial and commercial settings. Even a wide range of everyday products such as hairdryers and car brakes were manufactured with asbestos in their composition.
Asbestos does not have any kind of taste or smell. This is why it is not possible to detect its presence in a product or material just by examining it visually. For asbestos to be properly detected and classified, a sample of the material must usually be sent to a laboratory for testing.
Why is asbestos hazardous?
As already mentioned, asbestos is made up of tiny fibres which can become airborne when disturbed. If the fibres are inhaled, they can attach to the linings of the lungs and also affect the respiratory system.
The fibres cannot be broken down by the immune system because they are extremely durable. They cause inflammation, scarring and even tumours which can be life-threatening.
While asbestos has the potential to cause serious health problems, its diagnosis is extremely difficult in the early stages. It can take between 15 and 45 years for asbestos-related diseases to be diagnosed.
Medical conditions caused by asbestos exposure include:
- Mesothelioma – an aggressive form of cancer which targets the membrane around the internal organs, abdomen and chest. There are no other proven causes of this disease, other than being exposed to asbestos.
- Asbestosis – a kind of respiratory illness that causes scarring on lung linings.
- Lung Cancer – although lung cancer is mostly associated with smoking, asbestos exposure can increase the risk.
Asbestos has been used heavily in the past and therefore anyone can be exposed to it. But there are some industries and occupations where workers are at an increased risk. These include construction industries, product manufacturing, shipbuilding, power plants and many others.
